What is the procedure to change name in income tax records?

Hi, The IT dept uses the details which are in PAN database only. You may check your 'Personal details' as in PAN under 'Profile Settings' after login to e-Filing portal. If you wish to change these details then you need to submit 'name correction' PAN application. Click here to know more..for correction in PAN data.

Thanks for your prompt answer. Yes, IT dept supposed to use details from PAN, however in my case it happened otherwise. The name on the PAN has my surname abbreviated (for ex like: Mukhes V M) and income tax records has it elaborated. (like Mukhesh Verma Mehra). I don't want to change name in my PAN card as it will affect my other financial records, instead I am looking for the procedure to change the name enrolled at income tax department. Is there a way?

Hi, While registering in e-Filing portal, you would have provided the elaborated version of your Name. I don't think there is any option in the Portal to change it.  As mentioned in my previous comment, the IT dept takes the details from PAN database. So, it should be ok. If you are ok with the name provided in your PAN card, I dont think there is anything to be worried about..

Hi, Thank you for quick reply. I wouldn't have worried about this. But this time I received my tax refund cheque (instead of direct online transfer to my HDFC bank account) with the name as per the IT records and I don't have bank account with that name. All these years i used to get my tax refund credited directly to my bank account electronically. but this IT department did sent me cheque. Now, when I login to e-filing portal and tried to link my bank account with my IT profile, it is rejected stating the name mismatch reason. I was hoping IT department have to procedure to fix this. Now, what is the procedure to ensure next time my IT refund gets credited directly to my bank account and avoid receiving cheque? I see in e-filing, my profile has all proper bank details stored.
