What are the benefits of INDEX FUNDS, specially for a senior citizen.? Also , is there any ELSS in Index fund ?

Dear Anand,
Franklin India used to have an Index based ELSS fund ie Franklin India Index Fund.
After the recent reclassification norms, the same has been merged with Franklin India Index Fund.
I believe that now it does not provide 80c tax benefit and not an ELSS fund.
