Hi Sir,
I have been through your articles, and they are very useful and reflect your expertise in this field and dedication.
I would like to be advised on Mutual fund diversification, as too many schemes create a lot of confusion.
I am 25 years old and unmarried. I have to start investing in mutual funds with SIP and have no. of goals or targets in mind.
1. Short term, for 2 to 3 years.
2. Tax saving.
3. For more than 10 to 12 years.
4. For the retirement etc.
I am thinking of going with followings. (Not in any order)
MULTICAP FUNDS:
SBI Magnum multicap fund OR Birla Sunlife OR Icici prudential multicap
ELSS:
Aditya Birla sun life tax relief
DEBT FUNDS:
Icici Prudential long-term plan
BALANCE FUNDS:
Reliance regular saving fund (Or any other better acc. to you)
LARGE CAP:
Icici Pru focused blue chip equity fund
SHORT TERM DEBT FUND: (SIP my father wants to invest in, need it after 18 to 20 months)
Kotak Flexi Debt – Plan A OR Aditya Birla Sun Life Short Term Fund-Direct Plan
Would like to have your opinion and suggestions on this. Which funds and what needs to be changed here. And also how much important CRISIL MF rank is?
Thank you and really appreciate your valuable time.

Hi,
Thank you for following my blog posts!
Kindly note that do not give too much importance to Star ratings and MF ranks, most of these are given based on short term performances of the funds. We can consider investing in a fund based on its consistency to deliver above category returns for longer periods say 10+ years (even if it is not in say top 10 list by ranking method).
You may pick one diversified equity fund + one mid cap + one balanced fund for your long term (retirement) goal.
Ex : Birla Equity fund / Birla Tax relief + HDFC Mid cap opp + HDFC or icici balanced fund.
For short term goals, you may pick short term debt fund or MIP conservative funds.
Ex : Franklin Low duration fund / SIP MIP - Floater fund etc.,
