Good Afternoon Sreekanth, Thanks a lot for your reply to my earlier queries.  Earlier, I have mentioned that I am planning to get permanently settled in India in April or May 2017.  In this regard, I have a few queries.  They are:- How soon do I need to inform banks where I have NRE/FCNR/NRO accounts about the status change? Will I be be able to make use of Resident but Not Ordinarily Resident (RNOR) status for the next 3 years? Do I get an exemption from Income Tax for the next 3 years taking my RNOR status into account? I have been reading about a status called Resident but not Ordinarily Resident (RNOR) that I can make use of for another 3 years depending on the date of return.  In my case, mostly my return date is going to be 25th April 2017. From what I read, this is my understanding. A person is an RNOR if he/she meets either of these two conditions: - He/she has been non-resident in India, i.e. an NRI, in nine out of the ten previous years preceding that year, or - He/she has, during the seven previous years preceding that year, been in India for a period of 729 days or less I am an NRI since March 1990 & until 2016 November I was in India for a maximum period of 60 days only in an year. Will I qualify as RNOR for 2016-17? I believe I will qualify for RNOR status as I was an NRI for all years preceeding 2016-17. Will I qualify as RNOR for 2017-18 ?I believe, I will qualify for RNOR status as I was an NRI for 9 out of the 10 previous years except for 2016-17) Will I qualify as RNOR for 2018-19? Appreciate if you could let me know. Thanks in advance. Madhavadas

Hi, Are you referring to Financial Years or Assessment years? You said - "Will I qualify as RNOR for 2017-18 ?I believe, I will qualify for RNOR status as I was an NRI for 9 out of the 10 previous years except for 2016-17) " Why is except 2016-17?? As you are in India only in Apr 2017. For FY 2018-19, if during the seven previous years preceding FY 18-19, have been in India for a period of 729 days or less, then RNOR can be applicable. Suggest you to kindly consult a Chartered Accountant who takes care of NRI taxation.

You may use this Residential Status calculator . Kindly go through below related article : Times of India

I went through the article & as far as I can understood, I am eligible for tax exemption for FY 2016-17(as I was an NRI for all years preceeding 2016-17.), FY 2017-18 (as I was an NRI for 9 out of the 10 previous years) & 2018-19 as well taking the < 729 days into account. Please correct me if I am wrong. As suggested, I would consult with a chartered account too.

Thanks,
Madhava das

Hi Sreekanth,
I have made typing errors while mentioning financial year, sorry about that. After going through the article, what I understood is that, my first tax year (FY2017-18) & I am eligible for 1 year RNOR status as I am an NRI for 9 out of 10 previous years. I can also avail RNOR for 2nd & 3rd year as I have spent less than 729 days in India in the past 7 years. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks,
Madhava das

Hi, Agree with you and I believe that your understanding is correct. The clause is EITHER of the conditions ie 9/10 years or 729 days...
