Completion of house construction

Q & A ForumCategory: Home Loans & CreditCompletion of house construction

Hi Sreekanth, I constructed an independent house at my plot for which I have taken a home loan in July 2016. The construction was completed in Feb 2017 and rented out this month. But I have not paid the municipal tax as yet due to the officers busy collecting taxes at year end and them expecting their under the table dues not paid by me. With this situation, can I claim tax benefit on my interest payments on my home loan this year with just completion certificate from builder? Is municipal tax receipt necessary to claim tax benefits? I am starting my full EMI from this month too. Thanks in advance for your clarification. Pradeep

Hi, As you have already rented out the property, you may claim tax benefits from this Assessment year 2017-18 onwards (FY 2016-17). Kindly read: https://www.relakhs.com/under-construction-house-how-to-claim-tax-deduction-on-home-loan-interest-payments/
