The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has around Rs.27,000 crore lying in inoperative accounts. There are chances that a small portion of this unclaimed money is yours. Many employees feel that the EPF account transfer is a cumbersome process and is a painful experience. It is often observed that we just ignore to transfer the funds to the existing EPF account.
EPFO do not pay interest on the EPF account, where no contributions (no activity) have been received for 36 or more months continuously. EPFO considers this type of account as an ‘Inoperative EPF Account.’ It is a daunting task to trace an inoperative EPF account and also we hardly get any help or support from EPFO.
In this post, let us understand – How to trace an inoperative EPF account? How to trace an old Employee Provident Fund a/c? What is EPFO’s online inoperative EPF account help-desk? What is the procedure to submit an online request?
Now, things are changing for the better at EPFO. It’s a good time to remember your long forgotten EPF account. And to make your job of staking a claim easier, an EPFO inoperative account online helpdesk has been launched recently.
Trace & track your Old & Inoperative EPF account using EPFO’s Inoperative Account Help Desk
The helpdesk works on the basis of how much and how accurate is the information that you can provide about your old / dormant EPF account(s). So, the more you provide, the better it is.
- Visit epfindia portal and click on ‘Inoperative A/c Helpdesk’ link.
- This will take you to ‘EPFO helpdesk website.’
- Click on ‘first-time user’.
- You have to provide a small description of your problem and click on ‘next’ button.
- In the next screen, you have to provide your old employment details. These details are like – your old company (establishment) code, PF account number, company address, date of joining etc.,You may use ‘search establishment’ option to get your old company details. (I believe that it is not mandatory to provide all the details. But, provide as much information as possible). Click on ‘next’ button.
- In the next page, you will be asked to enter your personal details like – your name, mobile number, date of birth, email id etc., Note that mobile number and name are mandatory fields. You can also enter your Aadhar number, PAN number and Bank account Details.
- Once you have keyed in the required information, click on ‘Generate PIN’. You will receive PIN on your mobile number. You need to enter this PIN to get the ‘Reference number’ on the screen. Kindly save the reference number for future use. ( In-case if you forget the reference number, you can get it, provided you have entered your DOB while submitting your personal details)
After submitting the request to the helpdesk, your query will be forwarded to the concerned EPFO’s Field Officer (Regional office). This happens if you have provided your old company’s code (Establishment code). If you have not provided the establishment code, your query is routed to the centralized EPFO helpdesk. They will call you to get more details and then your query will be forwarded to the concerned field officer to trace the old & inoperative EPF account.

How can I check the status of my request on EPF Inoperative Account Helpdesk online portal?
EPFO helpdesk portal has a facility to track the status of your request(s), based on the reference number.
- Visit EPFO helpdesk portal.
- Click on ‘Existing User’.
- It takes you to a new window as below and click on ‘Login’ as ‘Registered Member.’ Enter the reference number and mobile number to check the status of your request.
- If you have forgotten the reference number, click on ‘Forgot reference no’. In the next screen, you have to enter the mobile number and Date of Birth to receive your reference number.
Once your account is traced by the EPFO’s field officer, you will be notified through an SMS. You need to either withdraw the monies (by submitting Form 9) or transfer your old EPF account to your current EPF account.
If you are currently employed and have activated your Universal Account Number (UAN), link the old EPF account with your current EPF Account. Once the linking is complete, you can transfer the EPF funds online.
Trace and track your old EPF accounts. Even if the amount of your claim is small, reclaim it NOW. Kindly share your views on EPF inoperative EPF account help-desk facility. Cheers!
Latest Update (30-March-2016) : The Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has decided to provide Interest on Inoperative Accounts from 1st April, 2016.
Latest News (31-Oct-2016) : ‘Rate of Interest on Inoperative EPF accounts’ – EPFO to pay 8.8% as interest on Inoperative EPF (Employee Provident Fund) accounts. In case of EPF, if there is no contribution paid during the last 36 months, then that account is classified as “inoperative”. The inoperative accounts are not being paid interest since 2011. Around Rs 42,000 crore is lying in “inoperative accounts” across the country. About 9.70 crore employees will benefit from this proposed notification. Henceforth, the concept of Inoperative accounts will cease to exist. (Source : PTI & Union Labour Ministry)
Latest update (16-Nov-2017) : If an employee who is a member of EPF scheme, quits or retires from his employment and continues holding the accumulated PF balance, he/she has to pay tax on interest from the date of unemployment. So, the interest on EPF is tax-exempt only when the member is employed and the Interest credited to an employee provident fund (EPF) account after an individual ceases to be in employment is taxable in his/her hands in the year of credit. Interest that has been accrued post employment is taxable. This is as per the recent order by Income tax appellate Tribunal.

Hi Sreekanth,
Great article on EPF, appreciate your efforts!
My question as below.
I have left the organization last Nov 2021, so no further contribution from employer side till now. Further I’m planning to pursue on my passion so ideally this account may not get employer contribution in future. In this scenario, what is the process to keep the existing balance (current age 46, balance EPF 38L) till retirement age (58) at the same time account should be operative/active and get the yearly interest till the retirement age. Also please suggest how much accumulation will be there at the age of 58 based on current EPF balance. Do I need to withdraw partial amount (say Rs25,000 against child education or medical support) once in 3 years till my retirement age?
Appreciate your time and support on my query. Please do let me know if you need further information.
Regards,
Jagan

Dear Gopal,
Yes, you can get the funds transferred from your old EPF account to the latest one.
Note that your old UAN will get blocked.
Kindly read : Why should you Withdraw Old EPF Account Balance? | In-operative EPF A/c Timeline
Dear Sreekanth,
I really need your advice. I have been working since 2010. I had a PF account with an organisation for 3 years. At that time there was no UAN concept. After 2014 UAN came and I had another PF account for 4.5 years. Lastly, I had recently joined and left a company in 5 months. I have been able to transfer all the PF from 2010-2013 and 2015-2019 into the current PF account. But the challenge is that when I am trying to withdraw the money it is showing my work experience as only 5 months of my current company and not taking into account my work experience from 2010. In this way I will end up paying 10% tax. Can you please suggest me the way so that I can make sure that PF department takes into consideration my total work experience.
Dear Ash,
You can submit a grievance request to the EPFO and get the confirmation that your total service period has been updated.

Hello Srikanth
Thank you for your blog and your efforts in advising people in the comments
i worked for infosys from 2010 till 2015 and dint withdraw my PF , worked in 3 companies after that
i am unemployed now.
Infosys is askin me every 3 months to withdraw my PF and my account is inoperative , else it gets credited to senior welfare fund
with the change in inoperative account definition from 2016,how does it affect this senior welfare fund rule?
Dear Niraj,
Thanks for the appreciation!
Ideally EPF or Pvt trusts follow the same rules.
However, suggest you to transfer the fund from Infosys Pvt trust to your latest EPF account.
Kindly note that the interest accumulated during non-contribution phase is a taxable income.

Hello Srikanth
Thanks for the reply
Can you please tell me about the senior welfare fund rule becoz they are threatening they will send the total amount there?
As per EPF rule, they should manage my account till my retirement age of 55
again what they said in the latest mail.. that my account is inoperative and without UAN too
Dear Niraj,
One should claim one’s money from the dormant EPF account within 7 years of dormancy, otherwise, the money will be deposited into the Senior Citizen Welfare Fund by the EPFO.
After 3 years of no contributions, the EPF account is declared ‘in-operative.’ However it continues to earn interest at the rate declared by the EPFO for active EPF accounts. However additional paperwork is required to revive an inoperative EPF account or to withdraw from it.
After 7 years of no contributions, the EPF balance is transferred to the ‘Senior Citizens Welfare Fund.’ In this case, the EPF balance continues to earn interest, but at a different rate from that declared by the EPFO.
You can still claim your money from the Senior Citizens Welfare Fund, but proving ownership becomes a lot harder, especially if your ex-employer has failed to maintain proper records.
After 25 years in the Senior Citizens Welfare Fund (and hence 32 years of no contributions), your EPF balance is forfeited to the Government of India. This event is called ‘escheat’ in legal terminology.
Hello Sreekanth
I worked in my first company from April 2008 – August 2014. My company had opened a pf account then. When I joined my second job where I worked from August ’14 to March 2015, they opened another account. I am not working in any corporation since then. As of now I want to withdraw both my pf amounts. I have activated the UAN of my last company. How can I link the previous account with the current UAN? Also will I get the pf amount of the first company as 7 it’s dormant for almost 7 years.
Thank you
Dear Monisha,
You can get the funds from your old (EPF -1) account to the latest (EPF-2) account through UAN portal.
In case, online transfer is not possible, you can contact your first employer and get the transfer claim processed.
You may also withdraw the funds from EPF-1 and can submit online claim for EPF-2 as well.

Hi Sreekanth,
I was employed int 4 different companies from 2003 to 2014. I have left India for a job abroad. Since then I do not have any active PF accounts in India. Recently I have initiated PF withdrawal process with all 4 companies ( says 1st, 2nd , 3rd and 4th
Latest employer (4th one) alloted UAN and in the process of settlement.
Now 1st employer asking me to transfer PF to the existing UAN number (allotted by 4th company).
But here is my concern, since UAN number created by the 4th company and I am not currently employed, how to transfer 1st company’s PF to the 4th company’s account?
And one more point here, I do not see the PF details of the 1st company on EPFO portal when I login with 4th company UAN or even when I search with 1st company PF account details.
How do I resolve this issue? Can I see my PF details with 1st employer on EPFO portal ?
Thank you.
Sree
Hi Sreekanth, you have captured most of the scenarios. I was employed from 2003 till 2012 for company A. I have withdrawn my PF once I quit company A. Later I worked for company B from 2012 till 2016, have UAN set up with my new PF number, I am trying to withdraw now and has levied TDS as it considers only 4 years of employment without considering my employment with company A. Can you please let me know if there is a way to let epfo know about my years of employment before UAN.
my situation is also same, when I login with last company’s UAN number I don’t see all previous companies record. as i understand if the total employment period is less than 5 years I have to pay 30% tax on withdrawn amount, my total employment with all employers are more than 5 years but since I am just seeing last employment record in EPFO its 1 year, I raised a grievance ticket with EPFO, they sent one PDF attachment showing me all the employment details in their Ledger (this is correct) but when I login to EPFO portal I still see only last employer record who allocated me the UAN, can any one help here?
Hello Sir….My grandfather had been working In “National Rayon” Company from 1963-1973 period…We have their “Pf No, Employee No, Company Id” details….Can we recover the Money from PF account ?
Hi Sreekanth,
I was employed with a company in Mumbai, Thane in the year 2008. How can I know the EPF number, I dont see any inoperative account helpdesk on EPF website. Is it possible to retrieve the details as the company was taken over by Sutherland in 2010. Your response is highly appreciated
Dear Nikhil,
You can contact the concerned EPFO regional office where your account was maintained, they can help you!
Hi Shreekanth.
I was employed with a company that shutdown last year. I joined a new company and without any gap in employment a new pf account was set up. The salary breakup is such that the basic is very less and pf contribution over one year of employment is v small. Due to covid I have not received any wages since 5 months and this forced LWP is likely to continue in the foreseeable future.
I wish to withdraw my PF from my old company. (That is a substantial amount.) Is that possible since that company has shutdown?
Or will I need to transfer my old pf to new account and then withdraw?
What is the maximum I will be able to take out? Withdrawal under the covid category is not viable as the amount I will recieve is too less. Can I withdraw under the non payment of wages for more than 2 months category?
Please do revert as I am at my wits end on how to manage financially in the current situation.
Dear Anu,
May I know if your old EPF account is linked to your Aadhaar?
Are two EPF accounts linked to same UAN?
Hi Sreekanth..
Yes they are. Same UAN but different accounts.
Dear Anu,
As you are currently employed and contributing to the EPF Scheme, you can get the funds from your EPF A/c transferred to current EPF account and then can make partial withdrawal.
“The maximum limit that one can withdraw is 75 per cent of the PF balance or three months of basic wages plus dearness allowance, whichever is lower.”
Other Partial Withdrawal options..
Hey Shree,
Thanks for your reply. I have one final query, it has bee3n more than 5 months that I have received any wages. In this case how much PF can I withdraw and under what section.
Thanks
Dear Anu,
Do you mean to say that EPF amounts are not deposited by your employer ?
I left the company in 2015 but still i not activate or withdraw my PF . one main problem is i know my UAN no but i missed my mobile and bank ac no which is attached to PF.
Dear Pooja,
May I know what do you mean by – still i not activate ??
Dear Sreekanth,
I had epf with a private company between 1995 to 1997. I did not withdraw the PF after I left the company. Also few years down the line, I left India and stayed outside India for over 16 years. I recently returned and realized that I did not withdraw my pf from that company. Will my pf amount still secure with EPF? Is there any way I can regularize or withdraw that amount?
Dear Vasant,
Yes, it will be there..
Suggest you to kindly contact the concerned employer or EPFO regional office…
Thanks a lot Sreekanth.
Pls help
I worked in Two companies in India & not withdraw the PF Amount from there. As per your article I open the EPFO web site but it doesn’t show the link of inoperative account. Please advise what I should do to claim/transfer the amount from these inoperative accounts.

Dear Siddhartha,
Do you have UAN linked to these (or atlest one) EPF accounts?

Dear Rajkumar,
If you are employed and currently contributing to EPF scheme, you can get the funds of your old EPF a/c to the latest one..
Hello Srikanth –
Still this helpdesk link is working to claim from Inoperative A/c?
I PF account is ended 2014 (DOE EPF). I traveled to US for work. There is no contribution into my account after that. I quit my job in India. I am able to login to unified portal with UAN number.
Can I request claim for withdrawl through online?
What will be your suggetions to withdraw my money?
Dear Vinod,
I guess ‘inoperative provision’ is not available now.
Yes, you can try withdrawing the funds through EPF member portal.
Is your KYC (Aadhaar/PAN) linked and verified in UAN portal??

Hi Shreekanth
I have been working since 2007 July and I’ve never withdrawn my PF. I changed my organization and had retained it. A new account under same UAN is now being used for my PF.
When I generate my passbook I see the updates are only from 31st April 2008. It is strange and confusing, why 2007 PF deductions aren’t included.
Dear Archana,
Suggest you to submit a grievance request on this to the EPFO vis this link..
Hi Sreekanth,
My employer created 3 pf accounts for me in single UAN for 3 years of service. Now when i raise partial withdrawl claim, they were rejected mentioning Multiple PF id were present and Name not matched against PAN and UAN.
DOE is updated for only one pf account and due to that i cannot apply for final settlement claim online. When i try transfer online, it says “previous and present establishment details cannot be same” error.
As per suggestion from PF office from multiple grievances i sent offline transfer claim forms with attestation because i don’t have any contact details of my employer as i quit my job in December 2017. Now that offline claim was rejected mentioning no attestation to the forms, But they were actually attested. Am not sure how to proceed in this situation. Kindly guide me on settlement of PF amount.
Also, the inoperative epf account link is not available in epf official website now.
Thanks
Bhaskar.
Dear Bhaskar,
If possible, you may try visiting the concerned EPF regional office in person and sort out this issue.
Are you currently employed and contributing to EPF scheme?
Hi sreekanth,
Thanks for the reply.
I am not currently employed in any company. I quit on December 2017. I am trying different options to withdraw since one year. But no luck.
The problem is I worked in a sub branch in Andhra Pradesh and it was closed . The base branch of that company is in New Delhi. Also, the pf office is in Delhi. Hence difficult to visit and sort out issue.
Thanks
Bhaskar.
Dear Bhaskar,
You may try submitting a grievance request (if not yet) to the EPFO via this link..
Hi sreekanth,
Thanks for the reply. I have raised multiple grievance for the same and I got reply to finally send the transfer claims in offline mode . But offline mode without employer, we need to attest the claims forms.
When I enquire gazette attestation is difficult to get on claim forms. No one is ready to sign as they say it’s a hand written form. Only the photo copy documents of govt proof like Aadhar, PAN card they will attest. Kindly suggest on where to get gazette attestation for claim forms.
If gazette attestation on claim forms is not possible to get, i don’t understand why the hell do the EPF department asking for it?
Normal attestation like officers from APSPDCL they rejected as it is not green ink attestation.
You can understand the frustration of employees to get back their own money from government. Since 1.5 year i am trying, and all trials we’re invain. Online they reject, offline they reject, mentioning all different reasons. After all, it’s my money.
Don’t know what labour ministry is doing with all the pf money from ppl like me, who got vexed of trying…
Thanks,
Bhaskar.
Dear Bhaskar,
Is your ex-employer in business? Are they still in operation?
If yes, why can’t you try approaching them?
I m still perplexed as to why they had created multiple EPF accounts??
Kindly check if a Bank manager (where you have savings bank account) can sign the forms?? I have noticed that they accept this..
Hi sreekanth,
My employer subranch in Andhra Pradesh is closed. No contact available to connect with main branch at Delhi and AP. Delhi main branch is operational till January 2019. After that no contributions seen to employees. But employer status is active and not surrendered pf registration to Epfo yet.
When we enquire about employer organization in grievance got these details.
I have bank account at BOI bank of India. The manager of BOI sign is acceptable?kindly reply.
Thanks
BHASKAR.
Dear Bhaskar,
Yes, it should be acceptable to the EPFO..
But, can try for online PF claim right??
Hi sreekanth,
Will try the BOi manager sign. Thanks.
Online transfer claim when raising is giving error – present and previous establishments cannot be same. When I try partial withdraw online, Epfo rejecting the claims mentioning multiple PF accounts were present with same DOJ .
Final settelemment option not available online because DOE not updated for all the pf accounts. Only one pf account has DOE updated.
Thanks
Bhaskar.
Dear Bhaskar,
Somehow, you need to get in touch with your head-office (delhi) and sort this DoE issue.
Else, may have to visit in person to the concerned EPFO regional office..
Hi Sreekanth,
After sending offline transfer claim documents offline mode with manager attestation as suggested by you, i didnt get update all these months. When i raise grievance asking update on transfer claim status, they mentioned that they rejected the transfer claim because of dame DOJ, DOE in both accounts. They told to submit Joint declaration form to update DOJ and DOE.
As mentioned earlier, I have worked in one company for 2 years and employer created 2 pf accounts for me.
eg: 06/2015 till 11/2017 is my total exp.
PF account 1 – ABC – from 06/2015 to 08/2016 and 10/2016, 12/2016 contributions.
PA account 2 – XYZ – from 09/2016, 11/2016 and 01/2017 till 11/2017 contributions.
There is a collision in contributions from 09/2016 to 12/2016.
1. In this above example how to update DOE of first account and DOJ of second account. Kindly suggest.
Also, i feel that Dual experience problem will come at the time of withdrawl/transfer if i update based on contribution date. Please clarify.
2. PF Office replied in grievance to submit joint declaration form to update my DOJ and DOE in PF accounts. employer is shutdown and not able to provide signature and authorization, how can i send Joint declaration form to PF office? Please clarify. Thanks.
Thanks
Bhaskar
Dear Bhaskar,
You need to kindly contact your ex-employer(s) and get this sorted out.
If your employer is not in business, you may have to visit the concerned EPF regional office and clear this issue.
Dear Bhaskar,
Also, note that EPFO UAN member portal now has the provision to update DoE by yourself..
What are the forms requires for offline inoperative accounts for final settlement. Kindly share those documents
Dear Fayaz,
You need to enclose copies of your PAN card, Aadhaar, Form 15g (if required & eligible)..Mention your UAN number and EPF account number on all the documents long with the Claim form.
Dear Shrikantji
I have applied in September 2018.
But have not received any response.
And now the links are not working.
Can you pl. guide me?
Thanks in advance
Nitin
Dear Nitin,
If possible, you may try visiting the concerned EPFO regional office (or) route the claim through your ex-employer.
You may also submit your grievance to the EPFO via this link

Hello sir this is baldeep Dhiman from Patiala sir I was working with Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance in dec 2014 -December 2015, at that time I didn’t have aadhar card,
after leaving the company i got my form 16 also I have my salary slips but I didn’t get my uan number even after 2-3 emails to kotak.
I know my PF number and company’s establishment code so kindly suggest me how can I know my PF balance from EPFO portal.. my main details like my time of joining and exit, my emp Code, PAN and other basic details are with me except UAN of that time. Sir,Which are the ways from where i can get my total epf and eps corpus of working period?
Kindly revert.
Regards
Baldeep dhiman
Dear Baldeep,
I think, UAN was made mandatory since Aug 2015, so your employer (Kotak LI) would have surely created one for you.
Kindly check with them and get the UAN number.
You can also get UAN by yourself :
How to find your UAN
Go to the EPFO’s Unified Member Portal for UAN related services. Select the ‘Know your UAN status’ option under the ‘important links’ section. You will be redirected to another page. Here you have to input details such as current member ID or EPF account number, name, date of birth, mobile phone number and email. EPF member ID is printed on your salary slip.
Once you submit these details, you will get an authorisation PIN on the registered mobile number. On entering this, your UAN will be sent to the registered mobile number and email.
Hi Shrerkant,
Here first I want to thank you as you are solving issues related to many concerned problems.
Here I want to ask my very old epf account which is now inoperative.
It is inoperative from 2000 after resign from the company (5yrs).
And in 2001 I partially withdraw some amount. After that I don’t know about the status.
And recently I made complaint on epfo inoperative account but know 15 days has passed and no reply is prompt.
Any suggestions now what to do!!
Regards,
Nagendra Chaudhary
Dear Nagendra,
Are you currently employed and contributing to EPF scheme again?
Thankyou,
Shreekant for your reply.
Yes now I working in health sector but now not connected again with epf.
Actually that I want to know the status of my account what happened to that So, what may be done because I am sure it had remained amount in it. But time has passed and can’t manage to know about that.
Dear Nagendra,
Is your ex-employer in business? If possible, contact them and can apply for full withdrawal.
If possible, you can also visit the concerned EPF regional office and apply for full PF withdrawal. (Kindly carry copy of PAN, Aadhaar, bank cheque leaf and Form 15G)
Thanks again Sreekant,
Ook your second suggestion is suitable now as my ex-employers r a very big house So there attitude and they r not cooprative.
But one thing more what is Form 15G?
And because of you are concerned about the all procedure. If Personally I visit regional office and apply for it then how much time moreover they took to sort out account’s full withdrawal.
Nagendra
Dear Nagendra ..Offline claim requests can be processed in around 30 days by the EPFO.

Did you email to the EPFO to the mentioned Id?

Sir,
I have following Queries-
1) can UAN number be generated for Old In-operative Account for year 2007-2008 ?
2) How can I get Date of Joining and Date of Leaving details if my Ex-employer is lost.
3)If I Physically Visit Regional EPFO , The process of My Name correction if required may resolve in one day?
4) How can I follow up for above process and check the progress..
Dear sameer,
There used to an online provision to generate UAN by self with Aadhaar, but that provision is not available on EPFO unified member portal (for unknown reason).
Quoting an UAN is mandatory to make Claim.
However, EPFO has relaxed the provision that requires furnishing of Universal Account Number (UAN) for settlement of claims like PF withdrawal for all those who left membership before January 1, 2014.
Yes, you can also visit the concerned EPF regional office (where your PF ac is being administered) for final settlement. You can submit copy of PAN, bank cheque leaf & Aadhaar.
Online name correction may take more than 30 days.

Sir, Below part remain unanswered-
2) How can I get Date of Joining and Date of Leaving details if my Ex-employer is lost. (For offline claim??)
3)The process of My Name correction may resolve through offline?
Dear Sameer,
For offline claim request, DoJ/DoE is not required. You can fill those details in the physical form (CCF-Aadhaar) or CCF – Non-aadhaar form.
You can visit the EPFO regional office and get the name correction request processed.
I am getting the below error while submitting the request to withdraw the my money from the PF account
“Error occurred on 03-01-2019 07:39:34, while submitting your registration details. Kindly contact Inoperative Help desk at io.helpdesk@epfindia.gov.in
Dear Balamurugan,
It can be a temporary tech issue.
Did you try again after sometime?
Else, submit your grievance to them via this link..
Or at the above mentioned email id.
Hi Sreekant, This is a chronic error.
I have tried all possible channels (except visiting the EPF office) to try and transfer my inoperative PF account to current active PF account and UAN.
1. Tried IO helpdesk (which eventually gives the error)
2. Wrote to IO helpdesk
3. Wrote to regional Office
4. Submitted grievance
5. Tried Transfer claim using my active UAN (which gives me an error that my previous and current account details don’t match)
I believe my old PF has an old phone number (which i currently don’t hold). Is there a way i can update my Mobile number associated to my inoperative PF account?
Dear Anirudha,
Did you check if your personal details (Name/DoB/gender) between your old EPF and current EPF account are same?
Is your old EPF ac maintained by your ex-employer’s Pvt trust? Did you try taking help of your ex-employer?
My bank KYC was incorrect both the name and the IFSC code so I added another bank KYC with the correct details. My employer approved the new bank details. I can see both the bank details (old and new) on the EPFO site using my UAN login and password. But if I try to submit online withdrawal it still picks up my old bank KYC. I asked my employer to delete the older bank KYC or to change the order or sequence so that the latest one is picked up. They said there are no options to delete approved KYC or to change their sequence or order on the PF website. I’ve raised greivance for this online but PF office insists that the employer has to do it from their side. Can you advice to help my case ?
Hi,
I believe that there is no provision to delete the entries. One can just update the details in the existing entry itself.
Kindly check with your employer on this..
I left my previous company around 10 Years ago in proper way, But i didn’t transferred my PF with my new organisation. After UAN service launched i added my current organisation detail but last organisation PF account was Inoperative ( Its still Inoperative).I tried through online portal to make it active but couldn’t succeed as it showing some error (In online portal). Please suggest me what should I do to activate it & how can i get this money by transfer/Withdraw?
Dear Darshan,
May I know what error you are receiving?
You may also contact your ex-employer (if possible) and can get the funds transferred to the latest EPF ac.
Kindly read : What happens to EPS on Transfer of EPF account (or) when you switch Jobs?

Dear Sreekanth,
I have tried for applying annexure – k, but in the grievance facility UAN is compulsory which i dont have it. I tried registering complaint by using others but i was not able to register successfully.
Dear Aravind,
EPFO had earlier relaxed the provision that requires furnishing of Universal Account Number (UAN) for settlement of claims like PF withdrawal for all those who left membership before January 1, 2014.
If possible, you may contact the concerned EPF regional office (where your ac is being administered) through your authorized representative or through your employer.

Hi Sreekanth/ Aravind,
I’m also in a very similar situation.I have worked with two employers in India. I’m trying for immigration and need my old employment history for which the settlement was claimed. I have one of my PF no.linked with the UAN. But the other employment PF no.is not linked with this UAN. How can I do it? I want to get the other employment details. Kindly advice. I’m currently working abroad.
Thanks & regards,
Jino
Dear Jino,
You may contact your ex-employer and get the Date of Joining and Date of Exit for the concerned EFP ac updated, under your current UAN.
(or) you can also request for transfer of funds from previous EPF ac to the latest EPF ac.
Dear Sreekanth,
Thanks for your swift response. Could you please clarify ‘transfer of funds’ as I have already claimed the settlement from both companies. I tried to link my first PF account no.( no UAN available) with the UAN provided by second employer, but could’nt merge it using One employee- One EPF account option. I have the second employment details linked with the UAN.Is there any way to get the first employment details added to this UAN.
Thanks and regards,
Jino
Dear Jino,
Did you transfer the funds from EPF-1 to EPF-2 and then claimed total amount?
If you have just withdrawn the amount from EPF-1 and then joined new employer and then withdrawn amount form EPF-2 (if transfer of funds has not happened) then it may be difficult to get your old EPF account details linked to current UAN.
However, you may try contacting your old (ex) employer and ask them if it is possible to update Date of exit and Date of joining for the concerned EPF account under your UAN.
You may also post your query to the EPFO via this link..
In case, you get a resolution from them, kindly share the info here, can be useful to all of us here!
You may also try adding your old EPF ac using one employee one EPF account provision.

Dear sreekanth,
Not transferred the funds from EPF-1 to EPF-2 & i claimed it separately from both companies & received pf money few years back.
In order to provided secondary document (employment period proof ) for my immigration processing. Just one month back I activated by EPF-2 with 2nd Company provided uan . I got the passbook for EPF-2 & Found that the EPF-1 passbook is not available so, i try to link my EPF-1 to this UAN via one member- one EPF Account (transfer request)
It is showing transfer error : Online claim request cannot be processed as :
present employer has not made payment in your pf account.
my present account in uan is EPF-2 i have passbook for- EPF-2 , company provided the share also. why this error it is showing.
How i can solve this issue so that i can link EPF-1 to EPF-2 UAN
& provide my immigration agent employment proof based on the EPF-1, (i have all details for EPF-1pf no, DOJ & DOE) but this needs to be in the system Online .
I ask my EPF-2 Company to help
they replied : this transfer error not correct as company has already provided the share as you have the passbook.
he suggest me to put in the grievance & send to them Reg. no. they will forward to epfo office. but he not asked about the money claimed previously or not.
please suggest if pf money already claim then also we can transfer & link EPF-1 to EPF-2 UAN.
Please advice.
Thanks ,
Jino
Dear Jino,
As you have already claimed the amount, you can not get the funds transferred now.
You may submit your grievance to the EPFO and inquire on this.
You may also request for the Annexure-K for both the EPF accounts and this can be submitted as an EPF statement with all transactions.

As my current employer doesn’t have EPF schemes. My EPF was contributed up to last month (total 2 years), from my previous employer.
Below queries with respect to start of pf account.
if i will withdraw EPF money after five years, then amount will be taxable or not?
Will get interest up to five years without contribution?
can i withdraw full amount after five years?
is there any way to contribute from self in EPF, accept PPF?
Regards,

Dear Nilesh,
1 – Yes, it is taxable, as your service period is less than 5 years.
2 – Yes, you will get interest on the balance. But do note that the interest income accumulated during non-contribution period is a taxable income.
3 – Yes, you can withdraw anytime after 2 months from the date of exit from your previous Org.
4 – No.

Dear Mary ..Can be a temporary tech issue. Kindly try again..
what is the employer’s liability in case of amounts lying under “inoperative deposits” specifically if the PF deposits are maintained by an exempted trust
Dear dipa,
I am not sure about the guidelines in this regard.
I think if the funds lie idle for more than 7 years, such amounts are then transferred to ‘Senior Citizens Welfare Fund’ maintained by the Finance ministry of central govt. You may kindly go through this link (EPFO Notification)…
But, one can try contacting his/her ex-employer and withdraw the funds from idle EPF account(s).

Dear Taware ..Online withdrawals can be done only when Aadhaar has been seeded to UAN and verified, which may not be the case with In-operative account.

I really appreciate all your efforts to consolidate all this information at one place. This site is awesome.
I am not sure if I would be getting the amount now, as I had worked with my previous employer for a period of 8 months in 2006. However, if I have to visit the previous employer in person, that might not be possible. Is there a way we can get this processed online? I know the above article mentions getting the inoperative PFs online only after it is verified with the employer. My current employer has a private trust, not sure if I should be concerned about this.
Dear Mahavir ..As suggested in the above article, try using inoperative held desk.
One more option can be – You can transfer old EPF a/c monies to new one.

Not sure how to proceed further.

Dear Abhijit..There can be a tech issue with EPFO portal. You may try after few days.
Also, you submit your grievance online..click here ..
I tried using inoperative help desk but it took them two months to get back to me. They told me to apply withdrawal from ex-emp. Then i visited ex emp and got signed on form 19, 10c. I personnely visited relevant epf office, mumbai and submitted the forms two months ago. Still no update on claim. I again visited pf office 2 weeks ago since they never pick calls. All they said will be done by next week and still no update. Such a pathetic service and waste of time. grivielence guys also take so many days to respond. Anyway just shared my experience for readers. I think for in operative account better connect to ex-emp or relevant epf office. I guess no direct transfer without filling forms. My question: will i get interest since there is no official notification yet?
Dear Mukesh,
May be, you could have requested your ex-employer to get the forms processed..
Yes, I believe that there is no official notification on ‘interest payment for dormant PF accounts’..so I am not sure on this..
Hi,
I had quit “X” company in 2010 and am still to withdraw my EPF amount. This account has been been marked”Inoperative”.So I went through with the requisite process today described here to make it operative. My question is to withdraw the relevant amount, should I contact my previous employer or the PF amount transfer can be initiated through the government run EPF portal without my previous employer’s help.I am assuming that I will get the proper response from EPFO Inoperative Account Help Desk.
Dear RAUNAK ..Are you employed and contributing to EPF scheme now?
Yes, you may get a reply from EPFO help-desk with necessary steps to be taken..
I am currently self-employed.I am also not contributing to the EPF scheme. So I can withdraw the amount through the EPFO website and the help-desk will guide with the necessary steps. This is what you are implying.
Dear RAUNAK ..Yes, they may give you the required steps.
Mostly, you may have to contact your ex-employer and route withdrawal application through them.
Ok..thanks.will do the same..I hope the withdrawal procedure is smooth
Hi Sreekanth,
Can we check online how much amount is there in my inoperative PF account.
Dear Harish..I don’t think there is any online provision to track dormant account balance.
Once can transfer in-operative a/c balance to an existing EPF account.
My EPF account status is inoperative account. I saw the latest news says below, With this will all accounts will be operative after April 2017, as interest is paid or they will be still remain inoperative?
Latest News (31-Oct-2016) : ‘Rate of Interest on Inoperative EPF accounts’ – EPFO to pay 8.8% as interest on Inoperative EPF (Employee Provident Fund) accounts.
Dear Pavan ..Yes, EPFO has said that they will pay interest even on Inoperative accounts, but there is no official notification yet on this.
Hi I have In operative account,I am following everything what you have said above. But Iam not receiving OTP so i am unable to procee further
Dear Pritesh ..Can be tech issue..You may submit your grievance at this link..
Dear Sreekanth Reddy,
That’s great to hear from your comments where there is a possibility of getting my PF claimed,It’s been more than years i tried many measures to claim my PF. However, I Couldn’t find the way to do so. When recently i check two of my old companies PF accounts they were into inoperative account. I scanned around the google no hope and no traces about the companies.I logged into EPFO and seek help from Help desk that doesn’t help either. From my very recent company i claimed my PF, Hopefully the company created my UAN number,Having that number i merged both the old pf accounts to that UAN still that dint help either. Now desperately need your advice……..
Thanks in advance
Dear Ramkumar,

Hi Sreekanth…
Valid information… Thank you for sharing the same… I’ve worked with three organizations in India from July 2006 to January 2010 and moved to Dubai with a new assignment. Hi Sreekanth,
Reaching out to you because you seem to be actively responding to questions related to this article. I appreciate that approach since I have seen plenty of pseudo experts who publish an article but are unresponsive or unable to answer questions.
As you would be aware, as per 11/11/2016 notification of labor ministry, only PF accounts of persons “retired from service after attaining age of 55 or who migrated abroad permanently” will now be considered inoperative.
Unfortunately, the EPFO helpdesk portal you posted in this article is NOT helpful to those who belong to one of those two categories – people who migrated abroad permanently, because it doesn’t have a provision to accept foreign mobile phone numbers.
Please advice how people who migrated abroad permanently can avail online services of EPFO helpdesk?
Looking forward to a quick response.
Thanks in advance.
Sreekanth,
What is the solution for this scenario? I too face this problem, since I’m permanently settled outside India.

HI Sir,
I worked in a PNB bank in 2012 for six months, than after i resigned , i have a PF no at that time.
After that i never worked , But in 2015 i joined a new private company and got a new PF account and UAN also.
Now, My query is can i get or transfer my old PF amount (year 20012) to my new PF account without employer’s communication ( because it will take a lot of my time ) .
What is the process so that i can get the old company PF amount (year 2012).
Thanks
Dear Kul,
You have to communicate with your ex-employer and get this done.
You may also route this transfer request through one-Employee-one-EPF account facility. EPFO can help you to get this done quickly.

Hi Srikanth
I have a question about my PF. I worked in india for about 8 yrs till 2008. After that i have moved to US. I would like to know if my PF can be withdrawn now. Also is there any time limit for withdrawing.
Dear veera ..You can withdraw the entire PF balance. There is no time-limit as such (max – 58 years of age ie retirement age).
Your EPF a/c would have become inoperative, so suggest you to submit your withdrawal request through the inoperative help desk facility.

Hello,
My mobile number associated with my EPF account has been deactivated, and I’ve forgotten my online password.
How can I reset my password and registered mobile number of my EPF account?
Also, I’m living abroad now, and expect to be here for next 2 years. Is there a way I can prevent the account from becoming inactive by making voluntary contribution?
Regards
Ratan
Dear Ratan,
If you are not employed with the concerned company and not contributing to EPF then you can’t make voluntary contributions.

I was working for a software company in bangalore from 2006 – 2008. As i got married and had to go abroad with my husband ,I could not close my PF account and withdraw the PF money immediately. But unfortunately, the company was overtaken by another company in 2010.
I am aware that my pf account is moved to inoperative account now, after 8 years. I contacted the inoperative desk but there is no proper response. I was said to submit the PF withdrawal forms through my employer. But since my employer does not exists any more, i am not able to proceed further.

Hi, I don’t see any interest in my dormant EPF account for last year. Last interest was credited on 31-03-2015. I quit my job on Oct-2012. So as per the new rule, Govt will pay the interest in dormant account. Please help me in my doubt.
Dear MS,
Yes, as per one of the latest notifications the EPFO has to pay interest amount on in-operative accounts too.
The interest rate was recently notified by the Govt, there may be a delay in crediting the interest payment.
However, you can submit your grievance to EPFO, click here..

Hi Sir,
Thanks for providing such a beneficial information to us.
I have an PF account with my old company and I left the job in 2011. Now can I activate my old PF account and continue it with PF money transfer?
Please reply!
Thanks,
Dear Sonia,
Yes, you can do so.
Also, read: How to club old EPF account(s) through one Employee – One EPF a/c online facility?
Thanks for your reply!
Sir, as I mentioned above that I want to activate my old PF account and hand it over to my existing employer to start PF contributions once again. My current company is asking to open my PF account but I want to retain my old account here with this company.
Another confusion is this that my old employer said that withdraw your PF and ask your existing company to open new PF account because your account i.e. 2011 is very old and can’t be activated now.
Please suggest me that how much time it will take to activate my old PF account and can I give it to the existing company for PF contributions that is going to start from next month and what will be the procedure and documents I need to require to get this task done.
I have my PF account no with me.
Please suggest and reply asap, waiting for your respons!
Thanks.
Dear sonia,
Your new employer has to create new EPF a/c (new member id).
You can only transfer old PF a/c money to the new EPF a/c.
As you have your EPF a/c (old) one, kindly ask your employer to create new EPF a/c and you can then submit a request in INOPERATIVE HELPDESK to transfer old PF a/c money to the new one.

Hi Shrikant,
First of all thank you for this information and you doing a great job.
My query – A friend of mine has a issue with PF. He is working in a certain company from 2007 and in 2012 company was taken over by a major group having it’s own EPF system approved by Government of India. So,n ow when we check in the EPF website of Indian government it shows all the details about him but in passbook it is not showing any balance. Secondly in his current company’s website for EPF his contribution is seen from April 2012. Means no money from previous years is transferred.
Please suggest what to do?
Dear Shrikant,
The old EPF account number would have been different, your friend has to transfer the old PF a/c to new EPF a/c.

Dear Shreekanth Reddy, nice article on Inoperative PF account.
I worked for a company during 1997-2001. The PF was not withdrawn. Lot of search did not help me getting my PF account number.
I have sent a query to PF office as advised by you with all the required details and got a reference number too. I have not received any feedback from PF Help desk from last 10 days. How long I should wait? Is there any other way I can esquire about the PF account number.

Dear Sreekanth, yes I was contributing till May 16. Left the job now Its a trust. Reliance Industries.
Worked for 3 and half years so PF withdrawal is taxable.
I had worked for a company 15 years back but do not know my old PF account number. I want to transfer this to new account. Raised query for old account number with EPFO portal got reference number but no reply from from portal yet. How to follow up?
The EPFO grievance portal is not accepting the reference number. Do they have centre where we can call.
Regards,
Jitendra
Dear Jitendra..Suggest you to submit your request at EPFO’s one Employee – One EPF facility.
Dear Sreekanth
I worked in a company from Sep 11 to Apr 12, PF amount accumulated is 80,000(Employee and employers contribution) including interest, I could get this details from EPF tracker. Now my account is dormant/inoperative, I have not transferred it to new EPF account. I want to withdraw my PF in Sep 2016 where PF account completes 5 yrs though my service with employer was for 8 months. If I withdraw it in Sep 2016, will it be taxable?
Thank you so much for the help and quick responses I could see to needy people. Great work!!
Thanks,
Nilesh
Dear Nilesh..If you are employed and contributing to EPF now, suggest you to transfer old EPF money to the new one. There are high chances that your withdrawal request may not be accepted and processed by the EPFO if you are currently making contributions to EPF.
Hello Sir,
I had worked for an IT Company from July 2010 to March 2013, I had left work because I was ill and then from 2014 to 2016 i pursued my Masters Degree. Now I wanted to know whether my pf account is active or not? Also when I left my job, I had opted for a PF transfer as well.
Now in a few days, I would be joining a new company and there they would require my details so that is why I have asked this. Also the new employer wants my Universal Account Number.. what is this?
Dear Saurabh..You have mentioned that you have transferred your PF? So, to which a/c have you transferred as you were unemployed right?
Kindly go through below articles;

How to generate UAN online?
Hello Sir,
Thank you for your response. In my previous firm, there was an option to either settle it or transfer the account. I opted for transfer but due to my ill health, i did not join any company and instead pursued my masters degree.
I just checked my previous mails, I guess post 6 months, I got a final settlement bill from my previous company.
Also, I am not able to track my PF number as well.. How to solve this?
Dear Saurabh..I am unable to comprehend your query…To which account have you transferred the money? You may use the inoperative account to know your EPF a/c details (if the EPF a/c is not settled).

Hi,
I have query regarding recent changes for PF withdrwal. Now latest rule says that you can not withdraw employer’s PF contribution till you are 60 years. Now as I am not working anymore so there will be no contribution to my PF A/c . So does this mean after 36 months no interest will be added to PF A/C ?. Moreover my PF A/C is managed by a TRUST. So I can not check balance as well. I know my UAN but it is of no use. So please suggest what is the way to get my PF money back?
Dear Surya,
It is not 60 years. Kindly read : Latest EPF withdrawal rules 2016.

You may visit the nearest EPFO regional office in person and apply for withdrawal.
Kindly read:
Latest EPF withdrawal rules.
How to generate UAN online?

Dear sufin..I believe that it is not allowed (but i am not sure).
Hi,
My contribution to PF was stopped in Oct 2013, as I got job overseas.
Since 3 years my PF account is inoperative.
Now if I withdraw the same, will I receive only employee contribution + Interest OR full amount?
Thanks
Murthy
Dear Sreenivasa..There is some confusion (no clarity) on this..Suggest you to submit your request through the inoperative helpdesk and find out if you can withdraw full PF balance or not. Request you to update here about the status so that it can be useful to other blog reader too. Thank you!
Awesome article! Thanks a ton for writing this blog and sharing this information.
I have left my current job and no longer working. My PF account was last credited on July ’13. Hence, I would assume that it will become inoperative by June ’16. However, I have another inoperative account earlier from other company which I worked earlier. If I transfer the money from that inoperative account to my existing one, will this credit be treated as contribution and further accrue interest for next 3 years? I do no wish to remove the money from this account.
Dear Manja,
Kindly read: Latest EPF withdrawal rules 2016.
Thanks. However, this new rule will conflict with the conditions of the inoperative account. If a person resigns then the 60% of the PF amount will be there without any interest. Is there any update on the inoperative accounts. I feel that they should remove this rules of inoperative account after 36 month. Kindly share your opinion
Dear Manja,
A person can withdraw his share + interest thereon and not the employer share.
As of now, no clarity on inoperative accounts.
But, one of our blog readers has contacted his Regional PF commissioner and enquired about ‘in-operative a/c’, he has been informed that ‘need not wait till 58 and can be withdrawn fully’. I am not endorsing this but its an update.
You can read this comment at this link…
Sreekath, Is there any update / clarity on the inoperative account? If the new changes of holding the employer contribution in PF until 58 years, then Govt’ should provide interest
Dear Manja..As of now, NO.
But looks like the EPFO is accepting full PF balance withdrawals on in-operative accounts (as of now). This has been shared by one of our blog readers.
how to get my pf amount back i forget my pf account number plz suggest me hw to get my money back….
Dear Ravi..You can provide all the possible details that you have while submitting the request. EPFO will get back to you and may let you know your old EPF a/c number.
dear sir, the details are the establishment is TD POWER SYSTEMS PVT LTD located in dabaspet bangalore rural district.. i worked thr from 7-12-2009 to 4-5-2012 my pan card number is AYUPR9941B and my date of birth is 13-06-1985 plz help me sir……
Hi
I did registered in inoperative help desk and its working fine. I am waiting for there reply. How fast this system works ? I have a 7 yrs old inoperative account. I have UAN number for my new account. But my earlier company is a defaulter and it is already closed. I tried withdrawal several times but not succeeded. Hope this help desk will help me to resolve my problem. Thanks for this blog. very helpful for us. My questions to u is
1. How fast this system works ?
2. Can I withdraw that money even though I have my new UAN number as I am working with some other company right now but I have already resigned from here also. My last working day will be March 30. I am not joining anyware after that. Now my plan is I want to withdraw both PF accounts in next few months.
Dear Prabhu,
1 – I am not sure about the time-line. Based on my experience and blog readers comments, while submitting the request if one provides most of the required details, you may mostly get SMS from EPFO within 7 days.
2 – As you are currently employed, it is better to transfer / link your old EPF a/c to your UAN and then apply for full PF balance withdrawal sometime in June.
Dear Sreekanth
I have already linked it to my existing UAN account. My question is when i link it to my existing account ( UAN ) what exactly happens ? will it show balance of my old account ? even though it is inoperative account. can i able to see the amount from my download pass book page ? What is the difference between linking the accounts to UAN and transferring the funds to one UAN. please clarify
Dear Prabhu,
Once you link old member-id (old epf a/c) to your UAN, the money from the older account will get transferred to the new account. But for old accounts (opened before the allotment of UAN), you still need to apply for funds transfer either in digital (in UAN portal) or physical form.
I WAS WORKING WITH A COMPANY 7-8 YEARS BACK AND THAT COMPANY SHUT DOWN THEIR ALL OF SUDDEN WITHOUT GIVING ANY PRIOR NOTICE AND WE ALSO NOT GOT OUR SALARY AND PF NOW THROUGH ONE OF MY FRIEND I GOT TO KNOW THAT I MIGHT GET MY PF IF I LOGGED MY DETAIL TO EPFO HELP DESK. I HAVE DONE THE SAME AND NOW I REQUEST TO EPFO KINDLY HELP ME TO GET MY PF. I HAVE PROVIDED ALL THE DETAILS AND IO HAVE GOT MY REFERENCE NO. I WILL BE THANKFUL IF I GET THE SAME.
ALTHOUGH VERY HELPFUL SITE.
REGARDS
AMIT SHARMA
Dear Amit..You will receive your funds 🙂 Do let me know if you need any help/info.
This article was much helpful. Thank you so much. I have raised a request now. They have informed that they will be contacting in some days time. Will it be possible for me to withdraw the amount from my previous PF account. If so how long can it take to get transferred to my bank account. Please advise.
Dear merrin..Are you currently employed? If so, transfer the old EPF monies to you new EPF a/c. Else you can apply for withdrawal. Generally the transfer can happen within 30 days.
Thank you Sreekanth.
Hello.
I am informed that with regards to PF funds, interests would not accrue to the same upon 3 years of accumulation (i.e., no withdrawals).
I wish to know if the same principle applies for accumulations in case of PF Trusts as well.
If possible, please provide the legal source ( either under the EPF Act/Scheme or a judgement/case-law) to support your answer.
Thank you.
Dear Dinesh,
I believe that your understanding is wrong. The EPF subscriber would get the interest amount on all the contributions.
It is only when one stops contributing to EPF scheme, the interest would still be given for 36 months on the accumulated balance. After which the EPF a/c would be treated as an inoperative one.
I understand, Sir.
I wish to know if a private EPF Trust owned by a company has the right to stop giving interests when the account becomes inoperative.
Dear Dinesh,
The PF Trust may frame their own rules and regulations for maintenance of PF accounts but such rules and regulations are supposed to be based on relevant PF rules. Yes, they do have the rights not to pay interest on inoperative accounts.
Hi shreekanth, I have been trying since more than a month now to withdraw my PF. a few weeks ago i realized that my account is now inoperative. as i am not working anywhere and i do not have another PF account, I applied on the Inoperative helpdesk. I got a reference number but i could never login into my helpdesk account as it always aid invalid ref/mobile number. Then as suggested on some other blog, I re-did the steps and again made a new account and this time i could login. I used to check it everyday since 6 days ago when i made the account, and since two days, again i am facing the same problem where it says “Either User Name or Password NOT Valid! Please Try Again with correct detail”.
I even tried following the “forgot reference number” page and put in my details but it says details not valid. I am sure i have been putting in the correct details as i was able to login since last 4-5 days. Any suggestions on what shall i do next??? Thanks in advance.
Dear Varun..Suggest you to submit your grievance though EPFO helpdesk.
Very useful and informative portal. I have question. I had done all the steps till ‘Once your account is traced by the EPFO’s field officer, you will be notified through an SMS. You need to either withdraw the monies (by submitting Form 9) or transfer your old EPF account to your current EPF account’ for my inoperative account.
After that what I need to do? Even I have UAN no from my current company. When I will come to know that I can transfer my old pf amount (inoperative account) to my current pf account ?
Thanks,
Imran
Dear Imran..Till you get information/confirmation from EPFO. You can also track your service request based on the reference no.
Hi Shreekanth,
Its been one month, I didn’t get any information/confirmation from EPFO for my inoperative account. What I can do further ? do we have any timeline for EPFO to give any information to me ?
Thanks
Dear Imran,
I am not very sure about the time-line. You may submit your grievance here..click here..
Hi Shreekanth, this is Ranjan from Mumbai. I have a query about PF account.
Is there any way to find out my PF account number from ‘Company Establishment Code’ details? As the company has been closed since 6+ years, I cant contact the admin dept also to get my PF account.
Do you know anyone who can help or do you have any email details whom I can contact?
Dear Jyotiranjan..You can raise service request as per the above mentioned points, kindly give whatever details you have while submitting the online request.
Once you receive SMS confirmation/info from EPFO, you may transfer the old PF monies to your new one (if you are currently employed and contributing to EPF).
Dear Sreekanth,
Thank you for answering this.
I wanted to claim my funds from previous three organisations which i worked back in 2007/10/12 i got a UAN number from my last employer my doubt is will all last worked companies come under this UAN number? I have not operated any of these pf accounts i was told to write a letter to PF commisioner. Can you please help me understand this its so confusing and mind boggling. one of my pf account number is KN/46370/36689 i have no clue how to find out my account balance. your help and time is much appreciated.
Best,
Sameer
Dear Sameer,
All the three old EPF account might have been converted into ‘inoperative accounts’. Suggest you to raise a service request by following the steps given in the article.
Once you get confirmation from EPFO office, you can transfer all the monies from three accounts to your current EPF account.

Hi Sreekanth Reddy,
I am residing in Bangalore. In 2007 my company was closed and I withdraw my pf amount. Now i got a new job and I need to reactivate my Pf account and I want to get UAN number for that old PF Account. How to reactivate my old PF Account? Is there any way to get UAN for that old PF A/c which I need to submit to my new employer.
My PF account is in old format with that I am unable to get any information in online. Please help me.
Thanks and Regards
Satish Kumar
Dear Satish,
You can generate UAN now online.
Once you get UAN, you can provide this to your new employer. After that you can get your KYC (bank,PAN,aadhar no) get seeded to new UAN and verified by your employer.
UAN is a unique number and only one will be issued.
Hi thank for reply, is this new UAN is linked with my inoperative PF account once it get in active mode? and is employer is able to verify all my past details of PF account once it has been linked with my old pf account?.
Dear Satish,
You can update your previous Member-Id (old EPF a/c). The name in the previous ID should match with the name of the current member-id.
hi,
Is it possible to activate UAN without Member Id?
while activating New UAN it is asking me my Member ID.
My Memeber Id is in now inoperative mode and i got information saying by ”it got settled” and information send it to concerned regional office for further action to be taken. And they are saying they inform soon.
Dear Satish,
Yes, it is possible.
Read this article.
Hi.
This is Indu from Pune. I had worked in a co in Mumbai in the year 2002-2004 for 18m. I did not file for claim of the pf withdrawal or transfer. It is now more than 12y. Can I now transfer that old PF to the current co PF number of UAN. Thanks. Indu. How to do that. Just follow up the above ?
Dear Indumathy,
Yup, kindly first submit ‘service request’ as per the above details.
After few days you may receive the status update from EPFO, then you can transfer the old EPF ac monies online.
Hi, Thanks, I got the old PF details from old salary slips discovered finally, and have submitted the online request with all details. I shall wait for their responses.
Is it mandatory to transfer those unclaimed to current UAN or can we get that credit to our acct ?
Thanks
Indumathy Narayanan.
Dear Indumathy..If you are currently employed and have active UAN, you have to transfer the funds to your new EPF a/c.
Hi Thanks,
In that article only UAN generation is there. But I already got UAN. I want to know is there any option to Activate that UAN without Member id is created. My Member Id is in inoperative mode and my account got settled. so system says my Member Id is wrong while I am going to activate my UAN. So Kindly guide me whether i need to wait till my new employer creates new Member-Id for me so that I can activate my UAN based on that or i can Activate it without that now itself.
Dear Satish,
Then in this scenario, sugggest you to kindly wait till you get new-member Id and then use it to activate your UAN.
Thank You very much for your suggestion on this regard. I keep in touch regarding this in future.
Satish.
Hello sir,
I am planning to withdraw my pf amount. I heard that the new procedure of EPF withdrawal without employer’s attestation has come into the picture. I am planning to withdraw through this. I just want to know which is my concerned pf office so that I can submit the related documents as well as with new procedure what time it will take to get my amount. Waiting for your reply
Dear Malik,

Hi Sree,
A lot of helping things here and for all these, thanks to you.
I have an inoperative a/c as my PF. I’ve gone through the methods as suggested by you and I’m happy to get my PF a/c no.
Now I want to withdraw the whatever deposit I got. Can I proceed directly by submitting forms? If so, which form? Is it different from the operative a/c holders? can I raise service request to know my PF balance if I don’t have any existing UAN?
Could you plz mail me your suggestions….
Dear Lalit,
It is very easy to generate & activate UAN online. Once you do this you can just give missed call and get the EPF balance details.

If you have used above service (inoperative helpdesk), you can let EPFO officer know that you are unemployed (assumption) and withdraw your EPF monies. If you are currently employed, you can transfer old ac monies to your new ac.
Hello Shree,
Thanks for responding.
I am currently employed and I already have a UAN through my current EPF a/c in Assam. But I don’t want to transfer my money(from previous a/c in Maharashtra) to the existing(current) a/c. Now my question is- can I create/activate one more for the previous a/c? I won’t have any problem for activating two UANs?
Dear Lalit,
If you are currently employed then ideally you have to transfer your old EPF account monies to the new one.

May I request you to kindly expedite the same at the earliest as I have to get about Rs.70,000/- from my previous Employer towards PF interest for the Inoperative PF account for the period beyond 36 months as my case is a PF Transfer and not PF withdrawal. Thanks. LV Sastry.
Dear Mr Sastry ..Kindly note that we only provide information for knowledge purposes and are not associated with EFPO in providing the services. Kindly contact EFPO.

Dear Prashant,
If no contributions are made for 36 months, EPF account is treated as in-operative account.
You can use above helpdesk link to contact EPFO and can request them to make it active. You can then transfer old EPF a/c money to your new one through UAN portal.
Sir i don’t know my Pf account num how can i know .i have already resigned from that company .iwant to apply pf.no one is responding to give Pf number in that organisation.

Dear Sreekanth, I left the organisation in 2008 and after that I didnt claimed my PF. In 2009 the company was taken over by other Company. Now it has been 7 yrs that I didnt withdraw my PF. Request you to kindly guide me with the procedure for withdrawal. I have my PF a/c no with salary slip.
My point here is that my company where I was working was taken over / purchased by other company .Can I directly apply for withdrawal at PF office?
Pls assist
Regards
Saket
Dear SAKET,
Suggest you to first submit a request through helpdesk link as provided in the article.
You can also submit the Withdrawal form + PAN card copy at EPFO office.
Since your EPF a/c is not linked with UAN you need Ex-employer’s attestation on withdrawal form. But it is not possible for you to get this done.
So, you can submit Affidavit + get attestation of withdrawal form by any gazetted officer , and then you can submit the docs at EPFO office.
Suggest you to check with them first and proceed.
Dear Sreekanth,
I have tried akot but I am not geting the text after clicking on ” generate pin”.
Is there any specific time window for that or is there any email id available of the same team??
Dear Deepak..i am not sure what could be the reason. You can contact the EPFO office directly in person.

Hello Sir,
The ‘Inoperative A/c Helpdesk’ link is not working. It says the webpage is not available. I have tried many times on different machines. Is the facility still there? Is there any alternative?
Thanks a lot!!
Sandeep
Dear Sandeep..I am able to access the link, just now checked it using Google Chrome browser. Try accessing it from a different location and not just a different machine.
Hi Srikanth,
I have worked for 7.7 years in a organization and resigned last month, after that I joined a new company where I got new pf account number linked with my UAN account.
I would like to know that am I eligible to withdraw my previous company pf ? when can I apply for pf withdrawal?
Regards,
Muniraj
Dear Raju,
As you are currently employed, legally you should transfer your old EPF monies to your new acccount.
Kindly go through my article – EPF online transfer through OCTP.
Hi Sree,
I really need to withdraw my PF for my sister’s marriage. How can I do that ?
I left my previous organization 7 months before and I worked there for 2.7 years. Is there any way to withdraw my PF ?
Thanks,
Alok
Dear Alok.. Are you currently employed?
You can contact your ex-employer and submit EPF withdrawal form along with PAN details.
Your withdrawals may be subject to TDS. Read my article : EPF Withdrawals & new TDS rules.
Hi Sree,
Yes I am currently employed.
My previous employer is saying that they I can only transfer the money to some other PF account.
Is IT ?
As per EPFO website current circular I can withdraw my PF money after paying TDS .
Please suggest how I can go for Withdrawl ?
Thanks & Regards,
Alok Singh
Dear Alok,
If you are currently employed then legally you need to transfer your old EPF ac money to your new account.
Hi Sree
Can I get the details of my inoperative EPF account, like when my account was opened, my monthly contribution etc. And other details
Dear Mohammed,
You may not get the required details, but you can trace the account and link it to your existing (if any) EPF account, after which you can keep a track of the entire fund.
Also, when you receive a call from EPFO team you may try to get the details.
Thank you Very much Sreekanth Reddy
Hi Mr. Sreekanth Reddy. Good Day. This is LV Sastry, a Sr. Citizen from Hyderabad.
Have you come accrossed any case law on payment of Interest for the In-operative PF Account for the period beyond 36 months. If so may I request you to pl. share copy of the same to my mail ID: lollasastry@covalentlab.com, as I have to get some PF interest for the In-operative PF Account for the period beyond 36 months from my previous Employer. Following are my details pl.
-Aafter serving for about 12 years I was Superannuated on 31-7-2010 from a Mumbai based MNC who is having an Exempted PF Trust.
-Thereafter I re-joined as a regular employee in a Private Ltd., Co., on 15-12-2010 ie., within a period of 36 months in which they started depositing my monthly contributions right from the day one ie., from 15-12-2010 with RPFC, Patancheru, Telangana.
-Sometime in Feb.2014 through my present Employer and through RPFC, Patancheru I have requested my previous Employer ie., Exempted PF Trust to transfer my PF accumulations together with updated Interest to RPFC, Patancheru.
-However while transferring my PF accumulations sometime in March 2014 they have paid interest upto 31-7-2013 only(36 months only) and not paid the PF interest for the period 1-8-2013 to March 2014 ie., for about 8 months which resulted in a short payment of about Rs.70,000/- towards interest for the in effective PF Account. Whereas my previous Employer ie., PF Trust earned the interest on my money for the balance 8 months also and the same is with the PF Trust only. After I left my previous Employer on my Superannuation they have neither settled my PF within the stipulated statutory period nor they reminded me any thing on this.
Initially (some time in April/May 2014) when I requested them to pay balance interest also for the remaining 8 months they said the programme which they adopted permits them to calculate interest for 36 months only and not beyond that. Once again when I represented the matter the PF Trust suggested to obtain written orders from PF Authorities.
Subsequently when I represented the matter, instead of examining all the above points in detail RPFC, Bandra East, Mumbai ( as my previous Co.(PF Trust) is under their jurisidication) simply informed that interest will not be paid beyond 36 months.
– In this connection may I request you to pl. go through the relevant link —http//:www.livemint.com/Politics/LswkUw6wiYzsw5rG7XiCvI/ Inactive -EPF-accounts, about Inactive EPF accounts to earn Interest: Government published in Live Mint on 01.12.2012. According to which in the case of Transfer of In-effective PF accounts from previous Organisation to present Organisation Government of India decided to pay the Interest even for the period beyond 36 months and no interest will be paid for the cases of withdrawal of amounts from Ineffective PF accounts.
As my case is a transfer case and not a case of PF withdrawal and further as it is an hard earned money and you will also agree with me that every paisa is valuable particularly in the fall of life of a Sr.Citizen may I request you to kindly guide me that how to get my balance PF Interest also from my previous Employer. For further details, if any, I may be contacted on 09866077163.(Mobile) and on my Mail id: lollasastry@covalentlab.com.
There may be number of other similar victims also like me.
Best Regards,

Hi Sree,
First of all, thanks a lot for all the efforts you have taken to help people like us who are having issues with the inoperable PF account.
I did all the things exactly as mentioned by you. I submitted my request. The very next day I got the message from the help desk saying,
“May kindly contact concerned PF Office as these cases are not being handled by this inoperative helpdesk. Further the facility to know PF Balance/Transfer/ Claim Settlement/NAME CHANGE available at website http://www.epfindia.gov.in May kindly visit the same”
Is this the right way? Or have they changed their process in last few days?
Please update me. It’s pretty urgent. Thanks again.
Dear Tejal,
What is your ‘service request’ all about?
Sree, how can I changed my name listed on the previous PF account no. which was assigned to me while Iwas working in my previous company?? I am not able to withdrew my previous company PF amount due to name mismatch and I am not sure how my name is listed on that PF. Need Help
Dear Deepak,
To get your name corrected, you may have to submit KYC documents (ID proof copy) to your Ex-employer and they in-turn can forward the request to EPFO office. EPFO will then update the database after verifying the docs. Kindly contact your ex-employer.
I did not receive any OTP pin when i click on Generate pin the message says OTP pin sent to your mobile no.
Dear Deepak..You may try again after sometime..
After filling up Kyc detail and clicking on Generate pin the pop up said the pin has been successfully sent to the mobile number but i never received the OTP pin on the mobile no. which i m using right now.

Your Account has been marked as In-operative Account. For details please contact respective EPF Office.
Now my Current Employer will be creating UAN Account(Universal Account No). Can i transfer the Old PF Account no to UAN even if the old PF account status is and In-operative Account. Do i need to follow the steps for Inoperative account and follow with the EPFO helpdesk
Dear Kishore,
Yes you can raise a ‘Service request’ through helpdesk portal and link your old EPF a/c with your UAN and transfer the monies.
Hi Sreekanth,

Dear srikant
7 years ago, I worked for a company for about 10 months(06/2007 to 04/2008).After leaving the company i did not receive my pf.
I have provided details for my account tracing in EPFO Inoperative Account Help Desk Portal.
Nearly after a week i have logged in to check for an update,
then a popup displayed saying “Your case has been disposed.Thankyou”,
and in the messages column i got 2 messages
1) “From the information provided, as per our records your Member A/c is settled. However case is transferred to concerned field office.you will be contacted shortly.”
2) “Please mention your Problem.”
Now what i want to ask you is I have not understood the messages sent by helpdesk.
what does concerned field office mean?
In the 2nd message they asked me to mention my problem, I dont know how to mention the problem as there is no edit/ submit option.
Also kindly tell me the detailed procedure to get the PF money into bank account for the period from june 2007 to april 2008.
Dear Sirish,
Looks like, as per EPFo’s records your PF money was already transferred. But, they have transferred your request to the concerned Regional EPF office to verify

Dear Mohammadu,
Small correction, it should be ‘previous’ and not ‘previews’.
You may have to visit your area EPF office in person. Submit the completed ‘withdrawal form’ (visit EPFO website – . Get the form attested by a Public Notary. Since you are not employed, make an affidavit that you are not employed elsewhere and hence withdrawing your EPF money. Submit these documents at regional EPF office. Remember, employer’s signature is not required. If possible, submit proofs (if any) that your the company has shutdown its operations.
Revert to me if you need any help.
I have filled up the form for the INOPERATIVE EPF Account on the online portal . But it does not send a Pin number on my phone, although it says the PIN has been successfully sent to your mobile.
I have tried multiple times but there is nothing and also no helpline number to call.
Please can you tell me what to do.
Dear Eva,
Did you provide correct mobile number?
I am not sure as to what could be the reason..
Hello Shreekanth, I have read all your articles and I like them all as it gives interesting and helpful information….
Thank you Manali. Keep visiting!
Hello, At present, I’m in Compnay ‘Z’ . My pas companies were X and Y.
I had requested the transfer PF from X to Y 5 years ago. But still amount is not credited into Y account due to technical issue(as per PF office).
But from X, amount is already transferred but not credited into Y.
Please suggest what shall i do now?
My another question is: By simply linking inoperative PF account to UAN, will govt pay interest ?
THanks
Mahantesh
Dear Mahantesh,
What are the ‘technical issues’?
Even if you do not link, the interest amount is payable (provided the EPF a/c is not a dormant account)
EPF IP account link is not works. Please check
Dear Chaitanya,
Are you referring to the links that are provided in my article (i checked, url links are fine), or EPFO’s website is unavailable?
I worked with Fidelity Investments at Level 9, Level 21, DLF Square Building, Jacaranda Marg, Gurgaon and Unitech Business Park Gurgaon worklocations of also named Fidelity Technology India Pvt. Ltd, and they issued me payslips with a HR PF Number. When I enter the same HR PF Number at the EPFO website it shows as record not found. And the message from EPFO says that they will contact me since about a month ago. Is there a way to get to my PF as I need the funds now as I’m unemployed and need the money now.
Dear Zubin,
Did you try contacting your previous employer?
I heard that Fidelity IT division (India) has been shut down ? Is this true?
Thanks for your valuable advice Sreekanth..Keep up the good work. To the best of knowledge Fidelity IT Division was closed sometime during 2010. But some of the IT sub- contractors , developers and vendors like Polaris may still be functioning
Dear Zubin,
Are you able to trace your PF a/c? Did you get reply from EPFO helpdesk?
Yes, thank you Sreekanth they did sort of reply, but only sort of. They’ve closed my case on their own with the closing remarks that such and such were my EPF and EPS accumulations as on April 2015, but they’ve not indicated the inoperative account number or told me how to access it as I may need it in the short term future ( I think I did not exceed the ten year lock in period). They should atleast have the courtesy to give me a new INOPERATIVE ACCOUNT NUMBER, and tell me how to redeem all the cash in it, as its just lying dormant. Do you know if they will Sreekanth issue all the inoperative account holders a live account number?
Dear Zubin,
Suggest you to contact the nearest EPFO office and get this done at the earliest. You may find the contact addresses on EPFO’s website.
I WILL LEFT THE JOB SENTAC SALES PVT LTD.YEAR OF 2006.MY PF NO-4907.
AND HOW CAN REFUND OUR PF ,SO PLEASE HELP ME.
Dear Ujjal,

Can we use this facility to track EPS account?
Also can we use this facility for the private PF trusts?

Dear Sunil,
I believe you can track EPS a/c too.
EPFO has also brought PF trusts under online account management (but i believe the work is still under process..mapping with UAN etc.,)
